Artificial Intelligence poses a major threat to human civilization. It is taking away jobs and being used for surveillance/incarceration; it is destroying the environment with polluting data centers. It is mixing fact with disinformation and taking away foundational skills needed for human critical thinking. Even some Big Tech leaders have admitted that AI could result in catastrophic consequences.
Powerful LA Vigil to Demand Justice for Lorenzo. Justice for Johan. Justice for All. ABOLISH ICE
On July 25, in downtown Los Angeles, a coalition of over 50 organizations and faith leaders gathered for a funeral procession to honor the lives of those murdered by ICE. This “Justice for All” action was initiated by the National Disappeared in America Coalition, with which we at NELA Alliance partner.
Over 70 coffins moved through the city—each one representing a life, a family, and a future taken too soon.
We are speaking out against ICE’s brutality and the elected officials who enable it. Thanks to the many hands and hearts it took to make over these coffins in a week, and paired with the ‘Killed by ICE’ placards as an undeniable visual of what is being done to our people.
We demand a full, independent investigation, the release and protection of those who witnessed the murder of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, an end to local collaboration with ICE, and for immediate action by Congress. Our grief is not silent. Our communities are demanding accountability: • A full, independent investigation. • Release and protect the witnesses. • End local collaboration with ICE. • Congress must act.
Los Jornaleros Del Norte, a band that is known for leading protests with cumbias and “Music that accompanies the struggle and celebrates the dignity of the immigrant and working-class community,” guided the procession from Los Angeles City Hall to Placita Olvera.
Purpose of the Vigil
Honor their lives and hold their families, coworkers, and communities in prayer.
Tell the truth about the killings and prevent the story from disappearing from public attention.
Create a visible, faith-rooted moral witness against violence, intimidation, and impunity.
Move participants from mourning to action by pressing local, state, and federal officials to meet the accountability demands.
