Online Talk by Artem Chapeye, Ukrainian novelist, reporter & army soldier
In his recently released book "Ordinary People Don’t Carry Machine Guns: Thoughts on War", (Seven Stories Press, 2025) Artem Chapeye reconsiders the choices we make when war is waged upon us.
Those who are standing up to authoritarianism and fascism in the U.S. can learn from the Ukrainians’ commitment, determination, and sense of human solidarity.
Translated into English by Zenia Tompkins, this moving book reveals the humanity of the Ukrainian struggle against Russian imperialist invasion and the ways in which millions have put their lives on the line in defense of human rights.
Faced with the many ways in which Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin are helping each other’s violent aims, it is incumbent upon Americans and Ukrainians to develop stronger bonds of solidarity to help each other. Our fates are intertwined.

Humanist Alternatives: A Six-Part Training Course - Hosted by NELA Alliance for Democracy
This course has ended but the syllabus and class materials are linked below.
One of the pillars of the rise of fascism in the 21st century has been the void in the articulation of a humanist alternative in the face of the deepening economic, social, political and environmental crises of our time. In order to develop conceptual and practical frameworks for humanist alternatives and constructive collective action, it is necessary to address and discuss the fundamental transformations needed in economic, social, political, and environmental relations on a national and global scale. It is also necessary to be aware of the long history of anti-humanist discourse and to respond to some of those critiques.
Each session in this course will focus on one of the aspects of the effort to develop humanist alternatives: Labor: Economy, Gender, Sexuality & Family, Education: Critical Thinking, Environment, Health Care, International Relations and solidarity. Instructor: Frieda Afary, Philosophy M.A., M.L.I.S. is a librarian and author of Socialist Feminism: A New Approach
